1994 Kazakhstan Diplomatic Cable
DOS Kazakhstan Cable (Jan 1994)
American citizen and Tajik Air Chief Pilot Captain Ed Rhodes, with two American co-pilots, was flying a Boeing 747SP at 41,000 ft over Kazakhstan (45°N 55°E) on 27 January 1994 when he saw an extremely bright object closing rapidly from the eastern horizon. The crew watched it perform circles, corkscrews and 90° high-G turns for forty minutes. Rhodes documented several photos with a pocket Olympus and promised copies to the embassy. Forty-five minutes later the 747 flew under contrails the object had left at an estimated 100,000 ft — an altitude where ordinary aircraft cannot leave contrails. Rhodes and crew concluded the object was extraterrestrial and under intelligent control.
Notable excerpts
“The object was extraterrestrial and under intelligent control.
“The light it emitted as having a 'bow wave' and as resembling a high-speed photo of a bullet in flight.
“Rhodes estimated the altitude of the contrails at approximately 100,000 feet — too little air at that altitude to enable contrails by ordinary aircraft.
Witnesses
- Captain Ed Rhodes · Tajik Air Chief Pilot (formerly Pan Am)
- Two American co-pilots
Locations
- Over Kazakhstan (45°N 55°E, 41,000 ft)
Significance
A UAP report observed by three veteran commercial pilots, with photographic attempts and contrail-altitude comparison, formally cabled by State — and including an explicit pilot judgment about the object's nature, which is unusual for a public diplomatic record.
