It turned suspicion of a government cover-up of alien contact into the cultural grammar of a generation — "the truth is out there."
Chris Carter's *The X-Files* follows FBI agents Mulder and Scully and weaves Roswell, MJ-12, saucer crashes and government cover-ups into a coherent serialized "mythology"[1]. Its tagline, "The truth is out there," became a marker of the 1990s. The show never claimed these events were real; instead it projected post–Cold War distrust of institutions into a narrative about secrecy and denial.
